Internet sleuths have identified a potentially significant clue in the rampant speculation over what motivated accused murderer Stephen Paddock to embark on the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. It's been nearly two months since Paddock allegedly opened fire from his hotel room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, killing 58 people and wounding hundreds more attending a country music festival across the street. Authorities continue to piece together how he was able to assemble an arsenal of 23 weapons, including 12 rifles that were modified into "bump stocks," which allow semi-automatic rifles to simulate auto-fire with one finger—and investigators are hopeful that while combing through CCTV footage, they might find exposure of what lead up Paddock's alleged attack. But while some are speculating that the Las Vegas massacre had something to do with America's supposed "war on cops," or that it had to do with Donald Trump's presidential run, there are signs that Paddock may have been radicalized during a trip to the Middle East some years ago. "There has been speculation on the cause of the Las Vegas massacre . . . but part of what's made this so puzzling is that people who knew Stephen Paddock don't know why he did it," said Andrew Kaczynski, senior editor for Newsweek. "That means if this is an act of terrorism, it's two people, one being Stephen Paddock. The other person is whomever got him to this point. . . . [Paddock] wasn't actively communicating with jihadis overseas, [he was] certainly not sending them anything remotely like what we saw in the attack in Las Vegas," Kaczynski said in an interview with The Daily Beast. "The evidence points to a single person and that is Stephen Paddock." Kaczynski spoke with investigators and spoke with dozens of people who knew Paddock or were even acquainted with him, but neither he nor his team found any link between the alleged shooter and any terrorist groups. MANDEL NGAN/AFP/Getty Images "People could speculate on what they want, but part of the reason why I think the Vegas shooting is unlike any other recent mass shooting is that Stephen Paddock doesn't seem to have been inspired by outside factors, it's unclear what caused him to snap. He wasn't groomed by anyone or recruited or communicating with anyone overseas," said Kaczynski. "Many people have suspected something was wrong with this guy, but if you can't name a specific incident that prompted this attack it makes you wonder what was wrong with him." During his trip abroad, Paddock reportedly visited Saudi Arabia in 2012 and 2013. He may have stayed at the five-star Atlantis Hotel and Casino during his first visit and he is believed to have later checked into the Al Nasr Desert Resort and Casino in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) around 2013. "It's not uncommon for people who are foreign nationals to check-in there," said Kaczynski. "At least one person who was friends with Paddock or worked with him at one time told me he seemed to have quite a fascination with Islam." Such visits are fairly common, however, as many countries send their citizens abroad to receive religious training or perform religious rituals that are not generally available in their home country. cfa1e77820
